The Nature of the Companion to the Eclipsing Overtone Cepheid
نویسنده
چکیده
The lightcurve of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) variable star MACHO 81.8997.87 shows evidence for photometric variations due to both stellar pulsation, with a 2.035 day period, and eclipsing behavior, with an 800.4 day period. The primary star of the system has been identified as a first-overtone Cepheid but the nature of the secondary star has not been determined. Here we present multicolor BVI photometry of a primary eclipse of the system and fit a model to the complete lightcurve to produce an updated set of elements. These results are combined with 2MASS JHK photometry to give further insight into the identity of the companion star. We find that the companion is most consistent with a late-K or an early-M giant but also that there are a number of problems with this interpretation. The prospects for future observations of this system are also discussed. Subject headings: Magellanic Clouds — Cepheids — stars: oscillations — binaries: eclipsing

Multiplicity of Galactic Cepheids from long-baseline interferometry
Context. More than 60% of Cepheids are in binary or multiple systems. Studying such systems could lead to a better understanding of the age and evolution of Cepheids. These are also useful tools to estimate the mass of Cepheids, and constrain theoretical models of their pulsation and evolution. Aims. We aim at determining the masses of Cepheids in binary systems, as well as their geometric dist...
متن کاملA comprehensive study of Cepheid variables in the Andromeda galaxy
Extragalactic Cepheids are the basic rungs of the cosmic distance scale. They are excellent standard candles, although their luminosities and corresponding distance estimates can be affected by the particular properties of the host galaxy. Therefore, the accurate analysis of the Cepheid population in other galaxies, and notably in the Andromeda Galaxy (M 31), is crucial to obtaining reliable di...

DIRECT is a project to obtain directly the distances to two Local Group galaxies, M31 and M33, which occupy a crucial position near the bottom of the cosmological distance ladder. As the first step of the DIRECT project we have searched for detached eclipsing binaries (DEBs) and new Cepheids in the M31 and M33 galaxies with 1m-class telescopes. In this eighth paper we present a catalog of varia...
متن کاملSearch for second overtone mode Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds
Accurate CCD observations of three Cepheids in the SMC were made with the purpose of confirming their nature of second overtone mode Cepheids. The stars were suspected pulsating in the second overtone mode owing to the unusual light curve and short period reported by Payne-Gaposchkin & Gaposchkin (1966). The analysis of the new data shows that for two stars the previous periods are wrong, and i...
متن کاملStructural Properties of s - Cepheid Velocity Curves ⋆
The light curves of the first overtone Pop. I Cepheids (s-Cepheids) show a discontinuity in their φ 21 vs. P diagram, near P = 3.2 day. This feature, commonly attributed to the 2:1 resonance between the first and the fourth overtones (ω 4 ≈ 2ω 1), is not reproduced by the hydrodynamical models. With the goal of reexamining the resonance hypothesis, we have obtained new CORAVEL radial velocity c...
